Mythos, X-94, Flying Over Mythos

“Shit!” Max exclaimed as he saw Colin maneuver to cross directly behind him. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Gotta pave a road for the rescue team. You can’t see it, but the damn griffins saw the hatch opening, and they thought it was feeding time. My wings will clear their descent. You find out where these bastards came from.”

“Copy that; careful of that jet wash.”

“Don’t you worry about that. I saw Top Gun.”

Max rolled his eyes, banked away from the engagement, and began his scans. He was sweeping the air for IR signals, of which there were plenty, but his goal was to track their movement and try to figure out exactly where they were coming from. Based on what Leopold had told him, he made for the nearby snow-covered mountain peaks.

He’d totally forgotten their own griffins—that’s how he thought of them—were coming along. They’d wisely avoided the direct conflict, and a group of them were waiting in the distance, uncamouflaged. Had they been in the mix earlier, it would’ve been impossible to choose targets successfully. Friendly fire definitely would have come into play.

As he approached, they separated into two groups, forming the lines of a V-formation with an opening at the front.

“Are you kidding me?” he asked himself. The opening was just about the right size for his X-94, with some wise clearance.

“First time for everything,” he said and flew toward the formation.

As he neared the group, they flew forward. There was no way they could match pace with him, even with their great speed, so they started moving well before he reached them. He realized the opening wasn’t for him, it was for his guns. They must have observed the fight in the air against the other griffins, and figured out the safe zone for the spread of his 40mm guns. They really needed to figure out how to communicate better with these things.

The griffins engaged with Colin and his wings seemed to ignore them. Their focus was on the men and women on the ground, and the new aerial opponents. That suited Max just fine. One problem at a time.

Max lowered his speed to stay in the pocket created by the friendly griffins as much as possible. Eventually, he would overtake them, unless he converted to a vertical flight profile and moved forward more slowly, but that would make him more of a target, so he threw that idea out as quickly as it entered his mind.

They flew toward the mountains for a good fifteen minutes, and Max felt the griffins were going as fast as they could. He’d watched them fly before, and usually they’d stop flapping their massive wings and coast on the thermals, but this time, they never stopped. They were on a mission, and they weren’t going to stop until it was done. That was the feeling he got.

Soon enough, they encountered the expected resistance. He saw movement ahead on one of the mountain peaks and used the magnification on his cameras to get a better look.
